A montage of whispers, remembrances and collections of little bits of my history I can’t help but dwell on tonight…
October, 2011. Liberty Plaza, New York. Occupy Wall Street, day 15. This was taken right before the march on Brooklyn Bridge where participants were maced by the police.
I have to visit at least once a year. There are endless things to do, places to visit, and the most favorite past time, people to watch. I’ve never been to New York and thought ‘same old same old’. It’s so massive for being so small. I’ve never been to the same restaurant twice, nor the same art gallery, museum, concert venue, bar… I guess that comes with only having a day or two each time I visit and I try to pack as much in as possible and inevitably return home thoroughly exhausted. It’s been one of those ‘must do’ items on the list of mine to return on my birthday in early December… I really want to go ice skating in Central Park. It will happen… maybe next year. It’s all about timing.
Every time I visit NY, I have a memorable cab ride. On this round, I had a demented clown. And it was 7:30 in the morning on my way to work! He was having monologues with himself but staring at me the entire time through the rear view mirror (somehow managing to drive a straight line) and he was pretending to be a different person or sometimes an animal that would show up to Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood and kill everyone off.
“Oh hello Mr Rodgers, I’m Mr. Snake! I’m here to strangle you!!” (as he demonstrates how to strangle with his hands, lifting them off the steering wheel.)
“Oh hello Mr. Rodgers! I’m going to stab you with this knife! Bwaahahahaha!”
Then he began to get worried that I was going to ‘steal his act’. He became vehement about me not sharing this with the rest of the comedic populace. I assured him I would not. I am curious as to what tipped him off, as I was certainly not laughing. But there it is, free for the taking if you happen to be mental.
Nina Simone played at The Apollo Theater in 1961. From an article by Rashod D. Ollison at theroot.com:
There she was onstage at the Apollo Theater in February 1961, barely two weeks before her 28th birthday. She was a slip of a woman, haughty and remote, her dusky voice commanding and blues-suffused. Halfway through her spoken introduction to Nat Adderley’s “Work Song,” Nina thought she heard giggles and chatter, which wasn’t unusual for the notoriously rowdy crowd at the famed Harlem venue.
But the former Eunice Waymon of Tryon, N.C., was having none of it. She snapped: “For the very first time in your lives, act like ladies and gentlemen at the Apollo.”
The crowd shut up immediately, and Nina turned back to the piano and performed.
October 2, 2011. New York City, NY. I recorded a video of my friend, Paul, citing a work of poetry that he will continue to revisit his entire life. He knew it by heart. I extracted the audio and have only placed that on here because it is so profound and powerful on its own. We’re sitting in his apartment in Harlem with the window open, sharing a beer. Paul and I went to high school together. He’s always been prolific when it comes to the written word and although not the author of this piece, Paul’s reading of it is itself a masterful composition.
The poem is called My Story in the Late Style of Fire by author Larry Levis.
October 2, 2011. New York, NY. Monument designed by NY Native Branly Cadet honoring Civil Rights Activist and Harlem Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. On the side reads a quote by Powell: Press forward at all times, climbing forward toward that higher ground of the harmonious society that shapes the laws of man to the laws of God.
October 2, 2011. New York City, NY. The Red Rooster in Harlem. Popped in for a cocktail. What a fantastic spot. Definitely on my dinner or brunch radar next time I’m in NY.
October 1st, 2011. New York City, NY. Tracking the blue balloon to find my friend, Matt, in a crowd. He found me at the same time.
A video I shot of the Occupy Wall Street camp around Liberty Plaza. Set to the tune of Chopin. This is right before the Solidarity March on Brooklyn Bridge.
